Carbonic anhydrase inhibitors and beta-blockers are examples of oral medications that can be used to lower IOP. Laser procedures, such as trabeculoplasty and iridotomy, are also employed to improve the drainage of fluid from the eye.

Recent advancements in glaucoma treatment have led to the development of innovative therapies that show promise in effectively controlling IOP and preserving vision. One such therapy is the use of sustained-release drug delivery systems. These systems involve the implantation of tiny devices within the eye that release medication gradually over an extended period. This eliminates the need for frequent eye drop administration and ensures consistent IOP control.

Another emerging therapy is the use of neuroprotective agents to prevent or slow down the progression of optic nerve damage. These agents aim to protect the nerve cells from further injury and promote their regeneration. Various neuroprotective agents, including brimonidine and memantine, are currently being studied in clinical trials to assess their efficacy in glaucoma treatment.
